In Chinese mythology, in ancient times there was a monster named Nian (年). He lives in the interior of the sea and only comes to the surface once a year to prey on animals and humans. On that day, residents will prepare to flee to the mountains

Nian is a horned animal, a mixture of dragon and kirin.
One day, a beggar came to seek shelter, but everyone hurried away, only an old woman took him and he promised to drive away Nian. He is busy with decorating the house. At midnight, Nian slipped inside, but immediately stopped when he saw red paper on the door. When he roared angrily, firecrackers suddenly rang out and Nian trembled in fear. When he saw a beggar, dressed in red, laughing at him, Nian immediately escaped from
the old woman's house.

The next day the villagers returned and were surprised that all the houses were still standing intact. They realized that the loud noise and the red color were things that were feared by Nian.
This is why, on New Year's Eve, families will have dinner in their homes fortified by red decorations. At midnight, firecrackers are sounded. In addition, people will wear new and festive red clothes with the aim that Nian does not come to the village and prey on humans again.
